A giant anteater pup that was born at Zoo Boise in the United States last year has recently been allowed to go about exploring the great outdoors for the first time ever.

Staff at the zoo say that the pup is a female, and that it was born to mother Gloria on December 8.

Due to the fact that this species is native to warmer climates, the tiny anteater spent its first few months of life in a heated barn, Zoo Borns tells us.

Now that outdoor weather conditions are finally giant anteater pup-friendly, its mom takes it on trips outside the barn on a regular basis.

The pup is entirely covered in fur, which is why it almost completely blends in with its mom's coat when the two go about exploring the outdoor enclosure.

Keepers say that Gloria will carry the pup on its back until the latter is about one year old. Besides, it will keep a close eye on it until it turns two, and it is confident and strong enough to look after itself.

For those unaware, giant anteaters are native to Central and South America.

The overall headcount for the species has declined in recent years, which is why the International Union for Conservation of Nature considers these animals vulnerable.
