The “Ghostbusters 3” sequel has been in the works for several years now, but the project came to a screeching halt when Harold Ramis, one of the masterminds behind the movie, passed away earlier this year.

Then, there were rumors claiming that a reboot of the franchise was being drawn up and that it was planned to depart from the original by starring women in the main roles instead of men. But when the rumor wasn't backed by actual facts, it gradually died down.

Now, the rumor is not only back, it's also confirmed, with Paul Feig tweeting that he had taken on the job of directed the new movie and that it was, indeed, going to star “hilarious women.”

Feig also said that he wasn't going to do a sequel for the ‘80s comedies that came before his film, but he was going to reboot the franchise by taking things in a new direction. This time around, the ghost-fighters were going to be women.

The director is known for hit comedies that went on to win big at the box office, such as “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat.” As you can tell by now, these movies also featured women in lead roles, so Feig has experience in this field.

Entertainment Weekly claims that Feig has already tapped Katie Dippold, the writer behind “The Heat,” to start work on the script for the new Ghostbusters movie.
