GhostBSD, a FreeBSD-based operating system that relies on Xfce, LXDE, MATE, and OpenBox desktop environments, is now at version 4.0 Beta 3.

The developers of GhostBSD have released yet another development version and the distribution moves a little bit closer to being stable. It's still pretty far off and it took the devs a while to get this far. In their defense, they did implement quite a few changes and improvements in these past few releases, so the wait will be worth it.

“The GhostBSD team is pleased to announce the availability the third BETA build of the 4.0-RELEASE release cycle is available on SourceForge for the amd64 and i386 architectures. This is expected to be the final BETA build of the 4.0-RELEASE cycle.”

“This release includes some bug fixes as well as new and updated packages. This release also includes the changes from direction GhostBSD is taking, Three workstation that is build a top of MATE desktop Classic, Purity, Element. We hope that you will enjoy this change!,” say the devs in their update.

According to the changelog, three workstation versions have been built on top of MATE (Classic, Purity, and Element), the first boot selector has been implemented to help users choose the workstation to use with GhostBSD, Xorg boot configuration can now be done a lot easier, the CLI Driver configuration has been simplified, and the Plank dock has been added.

Also, the GBI Entire installation option has been fixed, the GBI slide has been updated, and the FreeBSD base system has been updated to version 10.0-RELEASE-p6.

The distribution is available for both the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. Check out the official announcement for more details about this release. You can download GhostBSD 4.0 Beta 3 right now from Softpedia.

There is no information on when we might get to receive the final version of this new GhostBSD branch, but it's shaping up to be the most interesting version made so far.

Moreover, the GhostBSD developers have asked the community to thoroughly test the new build and report any bugs in order to make this a perfect release. This is a Beta version and bugs and problems are bound to still exist.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only. This system should be tested inside a virtual machine or a system that can't be harmed.
