Activision is announcing that it plans to launch a Space Camp game for the Nintendo Wii console and the DS handheld during the month of June. The publisher promises that the title will offer a multitude of mini games and a robust multiplayer mode in order to allow all those kids who can't get into the real world Space Camp to experience some of the fun it can generate.

Space Camp, the game, puts you into the boots of an astronaut wannabe who enters training. The bad news is that you manage to send yourself to the Moon and that afterwards, you have to complete a series of challenges and mini games in order to get yourself back to Earth. You have only one aid, a robot that can help you with scientific experiments, space craft steering and even defending the Moon from alien invaders.

David Oxford from Activision Publishing said that “What could be more fun than playing as an astronaut in a videogame? This scenario offers a new perspective on using Wii and DS controls to craft a truly fresh, family friendly gameplay experience.”

In multiplayer, gamers can choose between Cooperative Mode, where one player takes charge of the main character while another interacts with the environment, a la Super Mario Galaxy, and Party Mode, which is tailored for groups of more than two players, and pits them against each other in a tournament centered on mini games taking place both on Earth and on the Moon.

The real Space Camp is in fact named the United States Space & Rocket Center and was created by the Alabama State Legislature. At the moment, there are more than 1,500 artifacts located there telling the story of man's quest to conquer space. There are two educational camps housed in the center, one of them bearing the name of Space Camp. It can claim a 27-year-long history and more than 530,000 people have gone through courses there.
