Following the release to manufacturing of Visual Studio 2008, the Redmond company also dropped Visual Studio 2008 SDK 1.0 and Visual Studio 2008 Shell. Both downloads are courtesy of the VS Ecosystem team, and deal with the extensibility of Visual Studio, signaling a new era for the building of extensions on top of Microsoft's development suite tailored on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and the web. Two versions of the Visual Studio 2008 Shell and the SDK are immediately available for download.
"The Visual Studio 2008 Software Development Kit (SDK) 1.0 includes tools, documentation, and samples for developers to design, build, test and deploy extensions for Visual Studio 2008. You can also use the VS 2008 SDK 1.0 to create custom tools environments based on the new Visual Studio 2008 Shell. These new VSX releases set the stage for a new era of extensibility of Visual Studio. In this manner, Microsoft is enabling developers to create extensions for Visual Studio, by providing the necessary resources to permit the growth of existing development experiences. The Visual Studio 2008 Shell comes in Isolated and Integrated modes and provides the bottom layer for the construction of both custom-branded tool environments as well as the integration of tools and programming languages.
