Video game developer Irrational Games has launched a contest which allows members of the fan community for the BioShock series to get their name in the next game as long as they post it on the official website of the company.

The deadline for the “Name in the Game” competition is set for April 12 at 11:59 Eastern Daylight Time and the company has not said exactly when the winner is announced.

Players do not have to register on the site in order to get their name in the competition and Irrational Games says that a character, a building or a prominent business interest might take on the winning name.

The BioShock Infinite developer has been introducing the names of those involved in the game creation process in the world since the first game in the series, with places like Sinclair Spirits and Robertson's Tabaccoria taking on the first names of those who created them.

BioShock Infinite shares a name with previous games in the series, but the player will not be traveling back to Rapture, the under-the-sea self-contained city of the first two installments.

Infinite takes place on Columbia, a flying city that is built by the United States in order to show off its technological superiority over the rest of the world and is highjacked by a secretive group for more nefarious means.

The gamer will inhabit the body of a former Pinkerton agent called Booker DeWitt, who is sent there to track down a girl that has been kidnapped.

The game will emphasize cooperative play, with the two main characters needing to work together to fend off the numerous threats of Columbia.

BioShock Infinite was revealed early in the development process by the people at Irrational Games and is set to arrive at some point during 2012 on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC.
