Educational pricing and a bonus with Apple’s Back to School program

Apple has put up a sign notifying customers that September 20 will be the last day they’ll be able to apply for educational pricing on new Mac purchases. The company’s Back to School program this year nabs 100 dollar gift cards to be used in the App Store.

Announced in mid-June, Apple’s latest Back to School promo marks a shift from the company’s traditional iPod touch freebie.

This year, the portable players got replaced by a disappointing $100 iTunes gift card that they can only spend in Apple’s App Stores on apps, books and so on.

Admittedly there is quite a bit of educational content to be downloaded from Apple’s digital distribution platforms, so perhaps the $100 gift cards aren’t so bad after all.

“When you buy a qualifying new Mac with Apple education pricing from June 16, 2011, through September 20, 2011, you’ll get a free $100 Back to School Card to use on the Mac App Store, the App Store, the iTunes Store, and the iBookstore,” Apple states.

Macs that count in the program include the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops, as well as the all-in-one iMac.

Buyers save up to $200 on a MacBook Pro, $50 on a MacBook Air, and up to $100 on the purchase of a desktop iMac.

All Macs come pre-loaded with OS X Lion, the latest version of Apple’s operating system.

“With the Mac App Store right on your Mac, you can find apps for studying, doing assignments, and getting organized. And, of course, for playing games. The best part? You can download them to your Mac and start using them right away,” Apple adds on the Back to School marketing page.

To qualify for Apple’s Back to School campaign, you either have to be a college student or a student accepted to college; a parent buying for college students or students accepted to college; or a faculty or staff member at any grade level.
