A new application is now available for download for the owners of smartphones and tablet PCs that run under Google's Android operating system, namely Skifta 1.0 for Android, a piece of software aimed at enabling easy streaming of media while on the go.

Coming from Qualcomm Atheros Inc., Skifta 1.0 for Android would easily turn your devices into a global media remote control so that users can access music, videos and photos when at home or while on the go.

Skifta has also received DLNA certification, and can easily enable users stream content to Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) devices.

Any photo, song or video on the Android smartphone or tablet can be shared with compliant device using Skifta, without the need of any sideload or wires.

“Skifta for Android is a DLNA Certified software app that combines media shifting with DLNA/UPnP and lets you play your digital music, photos and videos on connected devices anywhere – no wires, no downloading,” the app's description reads.

The application arrives on devices with support for 3G and Wi-Fi networks, and also brings along a new desktop media server plug-in for Mac, Windows and Linux.

The Skifta platform also comes with a Channel library, which was meant to eliminate the need for users to manage more than a single application for being able to access media from the cloud.

Through Skifta Channels, Android users can easily access Facebook Photos, Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket, Soma.fm, Napster, ShoutCast, Revision 3, TED Talks and more.

“Extensive discussions with our beta group boiled down to this: Skifta should eliminate the barriers between consumers and their media,” said Dan Rabinovitsj, senior vice president and general manager, networking business unit, Qualcomm Atheros.

“The new version of Skifta addresses this issue with 3G support and media server software, and it goes a step further to deliver a powerful solution that puts the smartphone or tablet at the center of the connected home.”

The new Skifta 1.0 for Android is available for download via the Android Market here.
