Ghostbusters has been one of the most influential movie franchises in the 1980s with its tongue in cheek approach to action and ghostly encounters. The two movies had a pretty impressive lineup of actors, from the likes of Dan Aykroyd or Bill Murray, and they generated a cult phenomenon that gained a massive amount of fans.

This popularity is the focus of Atari, which announced some time ago that a Ghostbusters game would be made and it would feature the voice acting of all the stars in the movies. The announcement, made a few months ago, tackled the fact that the company, which was in some financial trouble, would place the money it had left into this game and release it on almost every platform out there, for the biggest profit possible.

Now, Atari comes to unveil the official release date of the eagerly anticipated game, which is June 2009. Players will get the chance to take part in a new set of adventures for the whole Ghostbusters team, all set 2 years after the events in the second movie, with Manhattan threatened by ghosts and supernatural forces yet again.

"Ghostbusters: The Video Game was penned by original Ghostbusters writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd and reunites members of the original cast for the first time in 20 years. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson lend their voices and in-game likenesses to the original story set two years after Ghostbusters II, with Manhattan once again overrun by ghosts and supernatural forces," reads the official announcement.

A pretty interesting piece of news, which is sure to make quite a lot of Ghostbusters fans very happy that their favorite movie characters will return. The game will be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii and DS, which qualifies it as a possible best seller. Let's just hope that Atari will deliver a great ghost-busting experience.
