A new gimmick from Rockstar

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the biggest and most profitable licensed properties active in gaming today. Its creator, Rockstar, has always broken the mold when it came to what new features the games would have or what innovative story they would tackle.

But the out-of-the-box thinking at Rockstar also expands towards marketing and new features in order to promote its existing game lineup. One of the latest titles from the company, GTA Chinatown Wars, a Nintendo DS exclusive game that tells the story of an immigrant working in Liberty City in order to avenge his father's death, will be the “victim” of a new type of promotion scheme.

Players that have their copy of the title linked with their Rockstar Social Club handle must have seen in the recent few days a teaser about Mr. Wong's Laundromat, but nothing else was revealed about it. That is, until MTV Multiplayer decided to look around and found out that it would be a flash-based game allowing you to unlock money in your own copy of Chinatown Wars.

Here's what GameSpy website, which will be offering its expertise for this new system, revealed, “Once at the Rockstar Social Club, registered users can also play Flash games like Mr. Wong's Laundromat to unlock additional cash that can be spent back in the game. GameSpy's custom work links money earned out of game straight back into your in-game funds to spend on bigger guns and more ammo (and you can never have enough of that).”

Rockstar also offered a short time ago some details about the new features that would appear for this handheld title, “These features are just the beginning for the Chinatown Wars section. We will be adding activities here that allow you to earn extra in-game cash as well as other special unlockables. Check back soon for more announcements.”

All in all, it seems that Chinatown Wars is becoming a must-buy title thanks to the great support that Rockstar has decided to give it. Check back here at Softpedia for more announcements about the game in the weeks to come.
