After being launched as a product destined for the Japanese market exclusively, the PS Vita reaches more and more countries and sales grow.

Developers and PSP enthusiasts are really into delivering the latest software updates for this increasingly popular console, so here we are, introducing firmware version 1.61 to you. Despite the fact that the download link at the end of this post does not come from Sony directly, psvitacfw.com claims that the file is the official firmware, extracted from the updated devices.

The 1.61 Vita firmware brings increased security updates, Google maps functionality, better recording features for the camera and more. One cool social feature adds the list up players you've met (up to 100) and displays the encounter history for each ID, available with just a screen tap.

Editors for psvitacfw.com covering the firmware release claim that the new software does not patch the exploit affecting the Vita Half-Byte Loader, and Homebrew loader users can safely update their consoles in complete confidence.
