Peter Altmaier, Germany's current Federal Minister for the Environment, says that once the country reaches 52 gigawatts of solar power capacity, it will pull the plug on subsidies for this green energy source.

According to several estimates, this should happen by 2018 at the latest, Tree Hugger reports.

Some believe that Germany decided to quit subsidizing solar energy some time after the industry had started experiencing financial difficulties.

Otherwise put, the country is merely trying to do some damage control and make sure money waste it kept at a minimum.

Still, Peter Altmaier maintains that subsidies for solar power were never intended as a long-term aid to the industry, the same source details.

On the contrary, they were merely designed to provide a temporary boost while the industry was unable to stand on its own.
