German email security provider Eleven reports that an average of 750 new PayPal phishing sites are spotted each day.

This means there are around 22,000 new PayPal phishing sites each month and 270,000 each year. The numbers are taken from Commtouch’s GlobalView URL filtering database.

Most of the new phishing pages are hosted on legitimate websites that have been compromised by cybercriminals.

“The findings highlight the need for hosters and website owners to protect their sites and for users to deploy an effective Web security solution,” Eleven experts noted.

As far as users are concerned, the company advises them to make sure the web pages on which they enter sensitive information are using https. Internauts should also take advantage of the safe browsing options provided by popular browsers.
