Germany’s Interior Ministry has revealed that it is working with US authorities on determining the impact of the NSA’s PRISM surveillance program on German citizens.

In the meantime, a spokesman of German Chancellor Angela Merkel has revealed that Merkel will likely bring up the controversial surveillance issue during US President Barack Obama’s visit to Berlin next week.

Germany is no stranger to spying on Internet users. Back in October 2011, several German states admitted using a Trojan to spy on individuals suspected of committing serious crimes.

In October 2012, a report revealed that the police were monitoring online communications such as Skype, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! and even Facebook.

The Washington Post reports that European Union officials also plan on questioning their American counterparts to learn more about PRISM. The European Commission is concerned about the privacy implications of such programs for EU citizens.
