Earlier this month, Elisabetta Canalis was saying marriage was not off the table with her and George Clooney. Yesterday, a joint statement announced they’d broken up, while a new report is now suggesting that it was George who dumped the Italian television star.

“We are not together anymore. It’s very difficult and very personal and we hope everyone can respect our privacy,” the former celebrity couple said, announcing the breakup.

The news came as quite a shock, especially since, just a week ago, the two were spotted out on a romantic dinner date, showing no sign of stress on their relationship.

Before that, Elisabetta was telling the Italian media that she believed she had found her soulmate in George and that she wouldn’t rule out marriage, even if she didn’t have any immediate plans of walking down the aisle.

This considered, confirmation of the split came out of the blue – and Elisabetta may have been just as shocked as the rest of the world, a friend of hers is telling the media, PopEater informs.

Just when she thought everything was ok between herself and the Hollywood actor, he told her that he no longer wanted to be with her, leaving her no other option but to storm out of the villa they shared.

“It’s all over. It has come as a real surprise to me. They were getting on really well,” Alfonso Signorini, the editor of Chi magazine, who recently interviewed Elisabetta and considers himself her friend, explains.

The two spent the day together last week and, from what he’s saying, Elisabetta seemed completely oblivious to any problems in their relationship.

“She must have had about 60 text messages from George! She was so excited about meeting him as he had a few days off from shooting his film in London,” Signorini says.

George’s decision to end the relationship came out of the blue, and no one was more surprised about it than Elisabetta herself.

“From what I know it was him who dumped her and she stormed out of the villa. I’ve tried to get her on the telephone but it’s switched off,” Signorini adds.

“I can tell you it was all for real. They were deeply affectionate towards each other. [But] they did have a very complicated relationship... It’s not easy to be with a star of that caliber,” he says, referring to what may have gone wrong.
