Humanitarian, political activist and actor George Clooney has just been arrested after protesting outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington DC. He was handcuffed and led away from the scene of the protest.

Ever since he became one of the highest quoted actors in showbiz, George has constantly been using his influence and celebrity status to draw attention to some very important issues.

He's always been very vocal about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Shortly ago, after a meeting at the Sudanese embassy, Clooney and others were detained by police for refusing to move, MSNBC reports.

The actor was accompanied by his father, who was also arrested.

“Clooney’s father, journalist Nick Clooney, 78, was with him and was also arrested, as were Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Rep Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and former Rep. Tom Andrews (D-Mass.). They were taken away in a police van,” the report says.

It is yet unknown whether charges will be pressed, but it would seem that the arrest was possible because the embassy is considered private property.

Before police officers stepped in and cuffed the star and other protestants, they had warned them at least 3 times they should move, reports in the press say.

Before he was arrested and taken into custody, Clooney spoke to the press outside the embassy, as the video report below can confirm.

He plead with authorities in Sudan to “stop weapons of mass starvation.”

“[We want] the (Sudanese) government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them, and stop starving them,” he said.

Word of Clooney's arrest immediately spread online, with social networks again doing all the heavy lifting in terms of spreading the news.

#FreeClooney is already trending on Twitter, so it's safe to say the actor is getting more love and support than ever.
