Following the launch of the codename Geneva Beta 2 at Microsoft Tech•Ed North America 2009, the Redmond company has also made available for download interoperability resources designed to make its next generation of federated identity technologies play nice with third-party products. In this sense, two interoperability whitepapers are now up for grabs via the Microsoft Download Center. Both "Geneva" and Sun OpenSSO and "Geneva" and Novell Access Manager went live on May 14, 2009, and are designed to streamline the implementation of Geneva in mixed technology environments, by driving interoperability and collaboration.

“Together, OpenSSO Enterprise and “Geneva” Server enable businesses to easily achieve SSO for heterogeneous applications across domains,” Microsoft claims in the "Geneva" and Sun OpenSSO whitepaper, informing that the documentation “presents an overview of each solution and its capabilities, both as individual and as interoperable solutions. Describes the business benefits of interoperability between the two solutions. Shares detailed use cases demonstrating the solutions’ proven interoperability in real-world federation scenarios.”

The perspective from Microsoft is that customers are now, more than ever before, relying on mixed source environments. In this regard, the Redmond company is adding its federated identity technologies to the list of solutions that interoperate with third-party products. Sun OpenSSO is not the exclusive focus of the software giant however, as an interoperability bridge is also built between Geneva and Novell Access Manager 3.1.

“Interoperability testing of code name “Geneva” and Novel Access Manager is well underway. Microsoft and Novell have verified that Novell Access Manager can be used as an Identity Provider (IdP) with a code name “Geneva” Server Service Provider (SP) over WS-Federation or SAML 2.0 protocols. It has also been confirmed that a code name “Geneva” Server IdP can be used with a Novell Access Manager SP over WS-Federation or SAML 2.0 protocols,” Microsoft informed.
