Gefen's USB-to-DVI Adapter: Six-Monitor Insanity

- The device is extremely gentle with the system resources

By: Bogdan Botezatu, Hardware Editor

Multiple-monitor setups are becoming more and more popular among users who need increased productivity. However, adding and configuring extra monitors may be extremely complicated for a less tech-savvy
computer user. Gefen just announced a new USB-to-DVI adapter that is alleged to let users enjoy another display while removing the installation hassle.

Geffen's adapter lets users connect a plug-and-lay monitor with VGA or DVI interfaces to any available USB 2.0 port on the computer. The device is especially targeted at notebook users, as the built-in graphics card usually don't come with more than one DVI output. Users can connect another digital video display or even a projector without needing a DVI port.

The USB-to-DVI graphics adapter delivers DVI-I video signals, for either VGA or DVI monitor compatibility. Moreover, it allows the user to tweak the monitor's visual performance as desired, given the fact that it supports a wide range of resolutions up to 1600x1200 pixels.

Shortly put, the monitor connected to the USB port via the USB-to-DVI adapter will deliver the same image quality as the primary display connected to the native DVI interface.

The USB-connected monitor can be set to duplicate the main display or extend the desktop for additional working space. For instance, you can have your applications open on the primary monitor, while the second display would host the web browser or the favorite multimedia player.

According to the manufacturer, if you plan to extend your workspace even more, you can connect up to six such adapters and still get crystal-clear images across all of them.

The Gefen USB-to-DVI Graphics Adapter can be successfully used on computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OS X operating systems. The device is available immediately for an estimative retail price of $129.
