Today, Spanish vendor Geeksphone has announced that its Geeksphone Revolution smartphone is receiving an update to the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, and that it will also receive a price cut later this week.

According to the company, the handset, which was announced last year with dual-boot capabilities, offering support for both Android and Firefox OS, will soon incorporate the Android 4.4 KitKat and CyanogenMod 11 platforms.

Moreover, the smartphone is said to be fully compatible with the Firefox OS 2.0 operating system release, which will arrive in the near future in a beta flavor.

Apparently, the engineering team working on this device has already managed to load the latest Android 4.4 KitKat and Firefox OS 2.0 updates on it.

Courtesy of the aforementioned support for CyanogenMod 11, the handset is also expected to provide users with additional freedom when it comes to the software loaded on their handsets.

Geeksphone Revolution is already a powerful device, capable of scoring almost 20k in AnTuTu benchmarks, and the newly announced updates should make it even faster.

At the same time, the vendor teases it with great battery optimizations, which are meant to provide users with up to 3 days of use on a charge when running under the Firefox OS (Mozilla’s Boot2Gecko platform).

The handset sports a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560, with Intel Hyper-Threading technology, which enables it to deliver great multitasking capabilities and long battery life (it was launched with a 2000mAh battery inside).

The phone packs a 4.7-inch touchscreen display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, and an 8-megapixel camera on the back, along with a 1.3MP front camera for video calling. It also sports the usual set of connectivity capabilities and sensors.

“Geeksphone's philosophy has always consisted in giving maximum possible freedom to users, who ask for it every day,” Rodrigo Silva-Ramos, Geeksphone co-founder, said.

“Therefore, we keep on innovating and offering the best solutions as in the case of the Geeksphone ‘Revolution,’ a fully revolutionary device with the latest versions of the different mobile operating systems available. Besides, I am glad to announce that we are working with other open operating systems.”

Starting May 1, the smartphone will be available for purchase at €199 (€164 without VAT), which should make it a viable solution for more users out there.

The mobile phone is already available for purchase through Geeksphone’s online store, as well as via Amazon in major European markets.
