The series has taken a wrong turn with bromance tone

The Gears of War series has been seen as a great example of macho-oriented entertainment, which focuses on violence and simple relations between characters rather than on complexity and emotion, although the developers at Epic Games always have in mind other directions for the game.

Speaking to the PA Report, Cliff Bleszinski, the public face of the Gears of War series, has stated, “If I were to pass Gears off to another studio, and they came back with a pitch of having a double-edged chainsaw, and the characters are more buff, and now you can pull off someone’s head and [expletive] down their neck, and they had a character that makes Cole look tame…

“I would look at them and say no, you’re going in the exact wrong direction.”

When asked about what other direction the Gears of War series might take, the developers name cheeked movie director Christopher Nolan, although it is not clear whether he was referring to the way that he reinvented Batman recently, to older efforts like Memento or to more fringe projects like Insomnia or Inception.

Bleszinski added, “Gears was always meant to be a lot more Band of Brothers than Predator, and that’s one of the things that, in hindsight, if I could go back and change I would.

“The characters didn’t need to be huge, although it turned out to be an iconic thing. I never stood in front of the company and said I wanted to see the biggest, most macho mother[expletive] you could ever see.”

He also acknowledged that the Gears of War series had become a negative stereotype during the last few years and claimed that he would like to change this in the future.

Epic Games has not talked about a new title in the franchise, but given its popularity they might be working on a launch title for the new home console from Microsoft.
