14 DAY TRIAL // The Gears of War franchise captured the imagination of a lot of hardcore gamers out there, particularly because it depicted big burly men wielding large guns with chainsaw bayonets at the end and fighting “the good fight” against a race of underground monsters called the Locusts.
But while the main group of characters, Delta Squad, depicted male stereotypes in the first two games, with one of them even trying to hint at a little bit of drama in the second, female gamers were largely left with almost no representative of their genre, except for communications officer Anya Stroud.
But it seems that this might change in the next installment of the series, Gears of War 3, as the new Gears-themed comic hints at a new female COG soldier, named Alex, who seems to be right at home with fighting Locusts and taking down Brumaks, as seen in the pictures attached to the article.
When asked about the possibility of more female characters by 1 vs. 100 Live host Chris Cashman, Cliff Bleszinski, the man behind the game series, revealed that he couldn't comment on “'possible aspects' of a game that 'may or may not' be in development.” He then said that the girl from the comic series “'may or may not' be involved in any 'as-yet-unannounced' video game projects.”
You can clearly see that he doesn't want to confirm a new Gears of War title, but seeing as how the franchise is now the main property of Epic Games, it's almost a no-brainer that development on a new iteration has started. Also, a small synopsis regarding the comic book in which she will appear surfaced a few weeks ago.
“Following a distress signal from the overrun city of Jilane, Delta Squad is dispatched to investigate with the help of a unique “scout” named Alex. The team, with the help of Sigma Squad, will explore one of the darker elements of the Gears universe, and to tell this unique and harrowing tale, series writer Joshua Ortega will be joined by Epic Games president Mike Capps! Further exploring the world of the sensational hit video game!”
