The leaderboards for the new shooter Gears of War 3 from Epic Games have shown the existence of three new game maps that players cannot yet access, called Azura, Rustlung and Blood Drive.

The three new maps might be some of the new content that Epic plans to launch in the coming months.

There's also the possibility that these are test maps that the developers have used to see how various gameplay mechanics are working and were never intended to be released to the public.

It's not clear why they are appearing in the public leaderboards for Gears of War 3.

Even if Azura, Rustlung and Blood Drive were not initially destined to be released to the public pressure from the fan community might persuade the company to polish them up and then make them available for public matches.

Three new maps is a nice chunk of content and well suited to be packaged, perhaps with some new weapons and some character skins, as the first piece of downloadable content for the game.

Epic Games has already confirmed that they will be delivering something new for multiplayer interested players during the month of November.

The developers have also announced that they are planning some DLC that is linked to the single player campaign, although it will likely involve new characters and will not deal with the main story told by the game.

Gears of War 3 uses the same basic template as the other titles in the series but is a much more polished products, focusing on the 30 seconds of fun philosophy that Cliff Bleszinki has created.

Gears of War 3 is at the moment available exclusively on the Xbox 360 home gaming console from Microsoft.

Epic Games have stated that this is the last game in the current series but that the game universe can support more stories in the coming years.
