Cliff Bleszinski, the creative director of Epic Games and the designer of the Gears of War series, is convinced that his team can still squeeze some more power out of the Xbox 360 console, but he is looking forward to next generation devices, as well as the future of the actual franchise.

Epic Games has made a name for itself with the Unreal Engine, which now powers a variety of games across platforms like the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or even the iOS, but its biggest franchise is without a doubt the Gears of War one, which just saw its third installment appear exclusively for the Xbox 360.

As such, The Telegraph decided to ask Cliff Bleszinski, the man behind the series, what he thinks about the current power of the old console and if it still has some resources left that weren't exploited by the team at Epic.

"I think if we bring out any more products on the 360 depending on life cycle, we’ll be able to squeeze more water from that stone," Bleszinski said. "That said, I still think there is a huge amount of room for improvement in graphics. We want to get to Avatar-quality and real time and beyond. I think we can absolutely get there, hopefully in the next generation if everybody ponies up and does good hardware."

When asked about his knowledge of next generation hardware, Bleszinski confirmed that he could tell the media what he knows, but it would be a violation of a non-disclosure agreement.

He did talk about the future of the Gears of War series, and how the third installment is just the end of the Marcus Fenix trilogy, so the franchise can go in a variety of directions.

"Well, we could do first person, we could do an RTS we could do anything with it," he offered. "We’re just limited by our bandwidth. As a studio we are in a very good position to be a slave to our success with the Gears franchise. And all good things come to those who wait."

Gears of War 3 has just been released on the Xbox 360 this week around the world.
