The creator of the Gears of War franchise, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, has talked about the focus of the upcoming downloadable content for the newest installment, Gears of War 3, while defending the story decisions taken by his team when developing the project.
Epic Games has just released its newest title, Gears of War 3, earlier this month, and already the studio's creative director, Cliff Bleszinski, who also created the Gears franchise as a whole, has revealed a few details about the DLC, which isn't going to feature characters from the main story, like Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago or Cole Train.
Now, Bleszinski went to the
NeoGAF forums to answer questions and criticism for Gears of War 3, letting slip some details about the focus of the single-player add-ons that are going to be released.
The Epic Games director admitted that, instead of concentrating on characters from the main story, the protagonist of the recent Gears of War comics, Michael Barrick, will go through new fully-playable adventures.
"It won't be the graphic novel," said Bleszinski about the content in the DLC, "but it will have all new campaign content that doesn't have Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird in it. Expect Barrick and more."
The Epic Games designer also tackled the criticism aimed at story segments in Gears of War 3, highlighting that he, alongside many reviewers, believe it's the best in the series.
"I'm not going to defend our story here, those who love it and get it truly adore it," said Bleszinski . "You can find plot holes in nearly anything, from Lord of the Rings to Dark Knight. Story, like any art, can be somewhat subjective and is easy to pick on."
"The GAF crowd can be somewhat cynical. If you go to YouTube and look up many of the cut scenes deemed 'silly' or 'cheesy' on here the majority of the comments over there cite how the scenes moved them, made them misty eyed, or out and out made them cry."
In the end, Bleszinski said that he and his team will strive to improve their storytelling with each new game, but players shouldn't expect all their
questions to be answered directly, as "creatives often leave certain questions unanswered so they can answer them later or let the hive mind of the internet to figure it out."
Gears of War 3 is currently available exclusively on the Xbox 360.
