Epic has offered a few new details regarding the multiplayer maps and the modes of the upcoming Gears of War 2 game, due for exclusive release on the Xbox 360 later in the year, in time for the holiday shopping frenzy.

Gears of War 2 is set to ship with 12 multiplayer maps on offer and there will be 4 different multiplayer modes that you can polish your skills on, with names like War Zone, Meat Flag, Wingman and Guardian.

War Zone is the new denomination for the classic deathmatch mode with teams, with five players able to get into the action on each side. Wingman spins the team dynamic in a whole different way, with five teams of two players battling out on the map. Temporary alliances and betrayals will be the dish of the day in this kind of matches.

Guardian is basically War Zone with a new role for one of the players on each team. The Guardian seems as the spawn center for his team, with the added gameplay dynamic that when he dies, no other people on his team can re-spawn during that game round.

Meat Flag (which is a pretty disturbing name for a multiplayer mode) does not involve carrying a flag covered in pork chops but playing a classic capture the flag game in which one of the players on the team is the flag.

The developers are also saying that amongst the game maps players of the original Gears of War will find a re-done version of the Gridlock map, which was a great hit in multiplayer.

The game will feature a new and improved cover model, which has been revised to work better in multiplayer matches, and there are also giant shields scattered on the maps for extra protection.
