Epic Games has recently confirmed that it has put together and that it plans to launch a new version of its very popular Gears of War 2 over the shoulder shooter and now we finally have a release date for it.

The Game of the Year edition of the multi-million seller will be on store shelves on September 1 and will allow all those who have not yet picked up the videogames to get it for a suggested price of 39.99 dollars.

The Game of the Year Edition of Gears of War 2 is set to include all the content launched until now and will likely lead to a bit of a resurgence in popularity for Marcus Fenix and his COG buddies. The only mystery is why Epic chose to wait for the release date to get so close before confirming it.

This edition includes the 19 maps that have been introduced to gamers via the All Fronts Collection and the extra single player chapter delivered via the Road to Ruin downloadable content. If you have not picked up Gears of War 2 until now, then this package is pretty interesting, especially because of the price, and even some veterans of the videogame might be interested in it if they have never picked up the DLC offered.

The only question is whether such Game of the Year Editions are not detrimental to the burgeoning market for digitally distributed content. After all, a lot of gamers, especially now, as they may be cash strapped because of the economic crisis, might hold off on picking up DLC for the usual 10 dollars when it is released knowing that publishers will be offering a Game of the Year Edition for successful videogames like Gears of War 2 about one year after the initial release.
