Despite the fact that Nintendo is getting ready to launch the Wii U in the coming months, and Sony and Microsoft are also ready for the announcement of their next devices, one leading industry developer would love to see more original intellectual properties created for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Randy Pitchford, who is the leader of Gearbox, has told MCV that, “Part of the reason there are lots of sequels is because that’s what people are investing in. I’ve never understood that.”

He also spoke about Brothers in Arms, another successful series from his company and compared it to God of War, the series from Sony, adding, “you know what else launched in Q1 of 2005? God of War. You can create IP at any time. You just have to make something that people want.”

“Some companies look at the market leaders and try to beat them at their own game. That’s a fine strategy if you’re capable of it. But it’s like going to the ice cream store. Everywhere serves vanilla ice cream, but if you eat that a lot, you will beg for a bowl of rocky road,” he continued.

He believes that rival publishers should stop copying their successful franchises and try and create new experiences that can change the overall way players look at the games they are playing.

The first game that Gearbox plans to launch in the near future is Borderlands 2, which will arrive on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC this year in late September.

In early 2013 the company will also deliver the much awaited Aliens: Colonial Marines, complete with a deep multiplayer mode and a scary single-player campaign.

Later during 2013 Gearbox is also set to launch the new Brothers in Arms: Furious Four, which will offer a new take on cooperative World War II gameplay.
