Dual wielding characters will have complex backstory

Borderlands 2 is a chance for the developers at Gearbox to develop the world that they created in the first video game in the series and put a little more emphasis on the story of the universe, something that will even be apparent when it comes to the playable characters.

Anthony Burch, who is the lead writer working on Borderlands 2 at Gearbox, told IGN that, “We certainly added more skills. We wanted the trees to be more unique. Everybody in the first game was implied to have just come to Pandora looking for the vault. Salvador is actually a native of Pandora and the idea is that he sort of protected a town wherever he lived out in the sticks. Once Hyperion came to the planet they've been on this quest to eradicate all the 'bandits' from Pandora, but in their mind that's everybody who is not part of the Hyperion corporate family.”

The Gunzerker, as the name implies, will be focused on bringing as many guns to bear as possible on his enemies, meaning that he will be able to temporarily wield to powerful weapons at the same time.

The character class will have three skill branches that gamers will be able to explore, each of them modifying the primary battle skill in different ways.

The fact that the Gunzerker can use two weapons also means that he can combine different ammunition effects, dropping shields with one of them while dealing health damage with the other.

The developers have revealed that while thinking about the skill trees and about their effects they explored their film knowledge and focused on quotes that best represented their approach.

For example on Gunzerker tree has a skill called Yippe Ki Yay, based upon Bruce Willis in Die Hard, which allows the player to extend his dual wielding by extra time every time he kills one enemy.

Borderlands 2 will be launched during 2012 on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
