Developer Gearbox Software says that Homeworld offers one of the most impressive space-based strategy experience in gaming and that as many players as possible should get access to the two titles in the series in digital form.

Brian Martel, the chief operations officer at the studio, is quoted by ShackNews as saying during PAX Australia that, “I was impressed with the story and it had some of the best spaceships that I have ever seen, outside of Star Wars. It was that part of it that meant something to me, so I really thought that we should get it out there for the rest of the world.”

The Homeworld intellectual property was in the hands on now defunct publisher THQ and it was one of the last ones to be sold, in April.

Gearbox acquired it but other companies including Aspyr Media and Paradox Interactive were also interested in getting the rights to the classic strategy series.

Randy Pitchford, the leader of the company, says that he was reminded everyday by Martel to keep an eye on Homeworld and make a winning bid for it.

The COO adds, “a lot of folks haven’t had a chance to play it, it has only been on DVD or CD, it has not ever been released digitally.”

Gearbox has already announced plans to launch updated versions of the game via digital distribution services on the PC before the end of the year.

Fans of Homeworld have been asking for a true sequel for the series since the second game was launched in 2002.

Gearbox is not yet willing to talk about a potential third game and will probably only take it into account after the digital versions are out and it can evaluate interest from gamers.

The company has limited experience with the real-time strategy space and is best known for its work on Borderlands.
