As for today, Spain is the fourth country in the world to officially allow same-sex couples to get married, just like the heterosexual couples.
The Spanish parliament has legalized gay marriage with 187 votes to 147, despite all protests issued by the Roman Catholic Church, while Canada voted to legalize
the issue this week as well.
The other two countries that approved marriages for the same-sex couples are Netherlands (the first country to have voted for the issue in 2004) and Belgium (the second state to have legalized gay marriages in 2003)
From now on, gay people in Spain can legally marry, but are also allowed to adopt children and to benefit the same inheritance rights like any other marriage.
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's , the Spanish Socialist prime minister has kept the promise he had made in his first day in front of the government. He has been fighting discrimination against homosexuals and he has won, despite all the protests of the conservative leaders and of the Roman Catholics.
"We are not the first, but I am sure we will not be the last" Zapatero said, hoping that "after us will come many countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality."
