Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment has just announced that a completely modernized version of the cult dungeon crawler Gauntlet will become available this summer on Steam for PC.

Gauntlet will be developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, who will innovate on the past incarnations of the popular dungeon crawler, while still keeping the same legendary format.

Players will be able to select from four characters, Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie or Elf, each one with its unique strengths and weaknesses, following the classical fantasy tropes: the warrior is the king of melee damage, the Valkyrie will be the tank, the Wizard will sling deadly spells and the Elf will be the swiftest of them all.

Gauntlet will tempt players with distinctive play styles for each character, an impressive art style and procedurally generated dungeons which will keep the gameplay fresh and exciting.

The modernized 2014 edition will take the classic arcade action to a whole new level, with class combos and both local and online multiplayer that supports up to four players.

All the action in the game will take place in sprawling procedurally generated labyrinths, with players going from chamber to chamber slaying evil creatures and completing various challenges, with an assortment of special items to be found in each dungeon to assist the players in their quests.

As such, players will be able to pick up power-ups that restore their health, unlock doors or shift the odds in their favor with various magical effects that will contribute to their survival effort.

The enemy hordes will be assembled from a vast assortment of fantasy monsters, from ghosts and grunts to demons, undead warriors and powerful sorcerers.

The development team has confessed that Gauntlet is one of the defining games of their childhoods, and have expressed their enthusiasm to be able to work with Warner Bros to deliver a brand new version of one of the best known video game properties.

"With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay," said David Haddad, senior vice president, Digital Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

The new Gauntlet will offer full support for SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machines that will begin shipping during the second half of 2014, and will be the initial launch in the WB Games Vault, a direct to digital portfolio that will deliver paid games based on various popular Midway and Warner Bros brands (hopefully, another apparition of a digitized Vin Diesel in a Wheelman reboot), as well as original IP across several digital networks.
