Dell was the first manufacturer to integrate the Opteron CPUs into its line of performance servers and rack-mountable clusters. And it seems that when one such as Dell sets the trend, it's hard not to do the same. Following the path, Gateway jumped to the other side and announced its first Opteron based servers.

The 1U-sized Gateway E-9422R is available with two AMD Opteron 2xxx dual-core processors and uses 12 memory slots with NUMA capabilities. NVIDIA MCP55 Pro powers the server and it even offers 2 PCI connectors, with one of them being fully PCI-X capable. 4 RJ-45 connectors also come as standard. As for storage, the Gateway LSI1068E 8-port SAS HBA is the standard interface, using Raid 1 capabilities. Optionally, you can install a controller capable of Raid 1, 5, 6 and 10. The 1U-sized server can accommodate 4 SAS or SATA hard drives. The server also comes with integrated Matrox G200 video adapter and uses a 650W PSU as standard.

2U-sized Gateway E-9522R can use up to 6 hard drives and has a total of 4 PCI slots, 2 of them being full height 4x capable and the other 2 low-profile based.

E-9722R is a totally different server and uses four dual-core AMD Opteron 8xxx processors. Sixteen memory slots are available for dual-channel NUMA. This server is also powered by NVIDIA's MCP55 Pro chipset. Due to its 3U size, it can hold up to 12 hard drives. Integrated Matrox G200 graphics and four Gigabit Ethernet ports also come as standard. Expansion capabilities include one PCI-X, two low-profile PCIe x8 and two full height PCIe x8 connectors.

Gateway offers a plethora of Operating Systems from which to choose, ranging from Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 to Red-Hat and Suse Linux. You can even choose Novel Netware as your SO if you like it. As for pricing and availability, no details are known at the moment, but Gateway support can be contacted in order to take care of your server needs.
