It's not all about superior technology

You know that there are three big players on the gaming consoles market, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Most of you probably think that the biggest rivalry is between Microsoft and Sony. Well. I'm sorry to disappoint you, Bill Gates sees things differently.

In a recent interview given to Tokyo TV, which has surfaced on YouTube, he briefly analyses the gaming console market. He only talks about Nintendo, totally ignoring the other Japanese console developer and manufacturer, Sony. "The strength of Nintendo in the portable space, has been very impressive". Gates is probably talking about Nintendo's big sales in the handheld consoles sector. The DS and DS Lite have practically smashed the PSP when it comes to sales.

Microsoft has not yet released a handheld console, but you never know what could happen in the near future. He continues the interview: 'It's surprised a lot of people, I think, and the Wii [it has been also impressive]. We see Nintendo as our toughest competition".

Sounds about right to me. I'm not sure why Sony has spent so much time sniping away at Microsoft, when the Wii keeps building speed at such a phenomenal rate. With their experience with the PSP, they should've learned by now that it's not always about superior technology. Nintendo won that fight by knowing the market better (quick games you can pick up, better battery life, etc.) and by having a cheaper price point. It looks like they've done it again, and fared even better with drawing new people in. Both Microsoft and Sony need to be on their toes, because Nintendo seems to have found a backdoor to success.
