The former English international admitted that Eriksson tapped him up while playing for Barcelona in the '80s

Once the tapping scandal blew off in the Premier League, more and more former & current football players start revealing important information concerning this issue. With Chelsea suspected of tapping 2 Leeds United youngsters and on Middlesbrough 15-year old, the scandal seems to be taking yet another leap.

Still, it's the "old boys" who manage to keep the headlines these days, and Gary Lineker started the show. The former English legend of the '80s - and beginning of the '90s - admitted that he was tapped up by former Fiorentina coach Sven
Goran Eriksson more than 20 years ago.

"I was tapped up throughout my career, once by former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, if not personally. And I never thought it was the slightest problem. Eriksson arranged for a representative from his club to tap me up when I was playing for Barcelona in the late eighties", admitted Lineker in his Sunday Telegraph column.

"Johan Cruyff, the Barcelona manager, was playing me on the wing, which everybody knew was not my best position, so Sven quite rightly thought I might be unsettled and fancy a move to a club who would play me as a striker", added the former English international. Lineker instead signed a deal with Tottenham in 1989.

He also admitted that tapping was - and still is - a usual method by which clubs are getting through their wanted players. Lineker wrote that: "I doubt that many transfer deals have ever been done without a tapping up process because no club want to be left with egg on their face by trying to sign a player who is not interested".

The tapping issue was brought on the FA carpet one week ago, when BBC News broadcasted an under-cover video (Panorama) which showed that most of the managers inside the Premiership use tapping for signing players. Sam Allardyce and Harry Redknapp are being investigated by the football bodies for such actions.

Tapping players up is considered a serious offence brought to football's laws and may see those involved in the process get long-time bans from the sport. The last such case happened in 2005, when Jose Mourinho was given a fine & suspension for tapping up Ashley Cole of Arsenal.
