The developer of Garry's Mod, a game that has been available on the Linux platform for more than a year, has revealed some sales numbers, including for Linux.

Garry's Mod is not exactly a game. It's more like a physics playground powered by the Source engine that's being used in games like Half-Life 2, for example. Garry's Mod has been available for many years on Steam and it was successful right from the start.

This title proved to be a surprise for its maker, who didn't anticipate the kind of success it eventually had. Garry Newman, the developer behind Garry's Mod, didn't want to port this title to Linux and expressed his doubts that it will be well received. He was later convinced by the community or he might have been kidding in the first place.

As it turns out, Garry's Mod is frequently in the top ten of the best-selling games on the Linux platform, and that can be easily seen from the numbers he reported.

Sales numbers for Garry's Mod

Valve is a privately owned company and it doesn't provide any kind of numbers for the sales it makes. No one really knows just how much money they are making, so it's left to the developers to disclose just how well they are doing.

Big publishers never reveal their sales on Steam, only the smaller ones do, but it's still interesting to see that they are actually making quite a lot of money. The reason why Garry Newman published details about Garry's mod was because it just passed the 6,000,000 mark for copies sold, which is quite an achievement.

If you look closely at the tweet shared by Garry Newman, you can see that the game has sold a little over 28,000 copies for Linux, which seems to have made up for the effort made by the developer for the porting.

"You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day. If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means," reads the Steam entry.

Garry Newman also founded a studio called Facepunch, which is responsible for another great game which is already registering millions of players, Rust.
