It seems that Netgear is not the only company catering to the needs of the business and enterprise market, as GarretCom has also made its move, in the shape of the Magnum 10ETS Ethernet Terminal Server for large substation environments.

GarretCom's Magnum "10" Series is a collection of networking devices for substation applications.

The newest member to this line, Magnum10ETS Ethernet Terminal Server, has, as major asset, a dual hot-swappable power supply (the first of its kind in the industry, according to its maker).

It provides up to 32 serial ports for protection and SCADA devices, as well as and IRIG-B time coding. That, or up to 8 Ethernet ports.

It basically is an IEC 61850-compatible networking device which sports the same combination of flexible configurability and high port density as the 10KT Managed Ethernet Switch.

"Although the Smart Grid initiative has increased the incentive to upgrade to IP-based systems, many power utilities have serviceable serial instruments that will be in operation for many years to come," said Frank Madren, GarrettCom President.

"The Magnum 10ETS Terminal Server provides the next generation of reliability, security and port configurability to enable large operations to be integrated into Smart Grid systems and to meet security requirements mandated by NERC/CIP," he said.

For those that want more specifics, the server is unique because it is the first of its kind to somehow cram two hot-swappable PSUs inside a 1U rack-mount package.

The official press release further emphasizes the merits of firewall protection, by virtue of the field-proven Magnum MNS-DX Network Management Software.

As for the aforementioned ports, the 8 Ethernet ones are fiber 10/100 connectors. Finally, it should be easy to integrate the product into even the most harsh substation environments, what with it being 68150 compliant. In other words, it has high temperature, EMI and shock ratings.
