Back in April, Dell launched the Latitude Rugged Extreme lineup of notebooks which aims to cater to the needs of professionals activating in risky environments such as firefighters, soldiers or police officers.

As the rugged device market seems to be getting more and more competitive, GammaTech is looking to give Dell a run for its money and has unleashed the full rugged Durabook R8300.

GammaTech says their dedication to providing competent military products has served them well and the latest Durabook R8300 packs all the necessary qualifications (like MIL-STD 810G, MIL-STD 461F, ANSI/ISA 12.12.0.1 and IP65) to prove itself as a durable combat ally.

The MIL-STD 810G rating means the device is immune to shock, drops or vibration. Moreover, it is resistant to very low and high temperatures.

The MIL-STD 461F Army Ground and Air Force standard translates into the fact the R8300 has been subjected to more than 10 testing specifications including Conducted Emission, Conducted Susceptibility, Radiated Emissions and Radiated Susceptibility to prove it is capable of surviving in the hands of army, navy and air force military forces.

The IP65 standard means the notebook is completely sealed against infiltrating water and dust, so it should be good to go in environments such as a tropical forest.

Computing-wise, the Durabook R8300 is quite powerful. For example, it is kept alive by one of the most powerful Intel chips available, namely the Intel i7-4667U processor clocked at 2.0GHz or 3.2GHz in Turbo Boost option.

The laptop has a 13.3-inch TFT touch-screen LCD and a backlit keyboard (optional). Absolutely crucial for army forces working in bright day light, the notebook boasts direct-sunlight readability without which these devices would be absolutely useless.

The Lithium-Ion battery packed on the inside should provide this beast with eight hours of life, but there’s a second battery option for those who need more.

The powerful processor was chosen to sustain vital operations on which field combat units rely, as sluggish performance can make the difference between life and death.

The laptop embeds integrated WWAN, discrete GPS module, Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260 module with 802.11 a/b/g/n and AC, mini card slot for Wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0 class 1 combo card.

Security is something GammaTech has focused a lot when building this laptop. The device features administrator and boot password protection, Absolute Computrace support (for remote management of continual tracking and securing endpoints), TPM 1.2, Smart Card Reader, Kensington lock, Stealth mode operation and Fingerprint Reader option.

The GammaTech DURABOOK R8300 notebook is currently available for purchase from the company’s official website.
