What it is: Sony’s PlayStation 3 hasn’t had
much luck with first person shooter franchises, so Insomniac Games is once
again trying to lure in the Call of Duty crowd with a new installment in its
Resistance series.
With a new protagonist, Joseph Capelli, a grittier take
on the fictional war between humanity and the monstrous Chimera, which now sees
humans splintered and running, as well as even bigger enemies that can be
killed with newer weapons,
Resistance 3 is definitely looking like an
interesting shooter.
How it is: I enjoyed the first two Resistance games, even
if they were
pretty much miles apart, with the first being a sort of World War
II-style shooter, while the second went full on sci-fi with futuristic space
ships and stuff like that.
Resistance 3 strikes a balance between the two, as it
uses the grittier view of the first and combines it with the sci-fi elements of
the second, like the special weapons wielded by protagonist Joseph Capelli, to
the brand new Chimera monsters, like the Longlegs variety.
Combat is tight and responsive, the weapons feel pretty
good, and this time, however, health is no longer regenerating all the time, at
least not in the demo I experienced. Instead, besides scrounging Chimera
remains for bullets, players must also be on the lookout for health vials, just
like the ones in the first game, to keep Capelli alive and kicking Chimera
monsters.
The levels I saw were pretty well designed, especially
since the enemies arrive from almost all directions, so the player needs to
always be on guard and on the move. Chimera AI was pretty decent, even if some
of them opted to renounce cover and just sit in the open, waiting for the
bullets of Capelli or one of his teammates.
They’re capable of flanking and
quite a few tactical maneuvers, especially in conjunction with the Longlegs, so
players shouldn’t write the enemies off so easily.
Resistance 3 managed to paint a pretty interesting
picture, albeit a very brown one, with the demo showcased at Gamescom 2011.
When and on what: Resistance 3 is out on September 6, in
North America, and September 9, in Europe, exclusively on the PlayStation 3
console.
