No cross platform play?

Games for Windows Live, the PC companion to the Xbox Live, has never been a great success. Recently, the platform has been relaunched and high profile
developers like THQ have announced that they plan to implement the service for multiplayer in Dawn of War 2. Microsoft thinks that there's room for growth and that the service might soon begin offering digital downloads the same way that Steam, Impulse or Gamersgate already do.

Michael Wolf, who is the senior marketing manager at Games for Windows Live, told GameDaily that the PC is “the cradle of innovation” and that “The PC gaming industry is not in decline; it's evolving and it's definitely evolving to a more online market”. No schedule for the release of full games on the service has been provided by Microsoft.

The big news might be the fact that the Redmond giant has pretty much given up on pushing for cross platform play. It seems like a very good idea initially for the Xbox 360 and the PC to be able to communicate and for players on both platforms to pit their gaming skills against each other. But the few titles which supported the feature were not huge successes and cross platform play never really took off.

Michael Wolf says that no future Microsoft game will implement the feature but that the company is ready to share all its know how with third party companies interested in the opportunity. He stated that “The community hasn't really had a huge outcry for it. It's one of those features that's really cool, but we're also hearing that it's not something we have to deliver”. It seems that as long as PC players use mice and keyboard setups, while console gamers use controllers, cross platform play is unlikely to prove a big success, although the underlying concept is sound.

I have a Wii, but have friends who own xbox 360s and want to compete online. I am in need of a new pc, so it would make more sense financially to purchase a computer that will allow me to play against my friends with Games for Windows rather than purchasing a new console that I would only use when playing on xbox live. Cross platform games would benefit me greatly. Also, I imagine there are a large number of gamers who own only one console (xbox 360, ps3, or wii) but also have a pc. So, it would seem (from an outsiders point of view) to be a great opportunity to enlarge your Xbox Live community and experience. Thanks.

I have to disagree with Tod. Each system has strength and weaknesses. The major drawback to all consoles; Cannot be upgraded, different controller schemes, too many consoles (Wii, PS3,Xbox360), cannot use all past console games on newer console. Yes there are some games that can be used, but not all. The console makers need to make a system that uses one language, and then they each can make their own console using the ONE language. Then they can focus on make better games.

Currently the consoles dominate the sports and racing arenas, but that is it. PC computers have the benefit of being better at RPGs (mods), Shooter (better controller scheme), Strategy games (mods and controller). When you mix these systems together, you have differences in game play.

Case and Point;
Call of Duty 4, no console gamer now matter how good they are cannot compete versus a PC gamer. The PC control setup is far more superior to any console. Now if consoles can attach a mouse and keyboard, then that would be a different story. In the end, all gaming companies need to focus on one gaming system. So we don’t have to buy all of these systems. I currently own a Wii , PS3, 4 desktop PCs and a laptop.

This is sad :(

I really like the idea of cross-platform play. In an ideal world, we'd have multiplayer between all 4 consoles...
