Online video game publisher Bigpoint and the television channel HBO have announced that they are working together to create a browser-based multiplayer online role-playing game linked to the Game of Thrones series.

The first look at the game will be offered at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, which takes place between March 7 and 9 and the development team promises an experience that will appeal to all those who love the world of Westeros that has been created by R.R. Martin in his A Song of Ice and Fire.

The development work for the Game of Thrones MMO will be handled by Artplant and the game will use the Unity engine.

The game is set to focus on the politics and the violence of the television show, allowing gamers to create a character and then master both combat and politics in order to ensure the survival and the prosperity of their own House.

Heiko Hubertz, who is both the chief executive officer and the founder at Bigpoint, stated, “With a rich and complex story, expressed through an amazing level of detail, it’s easy to see why the HBO series, Game of Thrones, has amassed an army of fans worldwide.

“We intend to build a game that resonates intimately with its diehard community of followers, while also creating an authentic gaming experience that attracts newcomers to the franchise.”

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are the producers of the HBO television series, added, “The creation of a Game of Thrones online role-playing game is a perfect natural extension to the series. The show has resonated extremely well with fans so we think they will be terribly excited to have an opportunity to be personally immersed in all the action.”

Bigpoint is planning a closed beta for the Game of Thrones MMO during the fall of 2012 and a full launch during next year.
