Because setting ratings records or writing history with its outstanding narrative and style isn’t enough, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is also en route to becoming the first television series to get an IMAX release. And it will happen sooner than you think: this month.

HBO and IMAX confirm to Variety that a few episodes from the latest season of the series have been remastered and will be arriving on the big screen in select theaters across the US as early as January 23.

The IMAX release is limited to just one week, and whoever is lucky enough to score tickets to the screenings will see more than just old episodes: HBO will also be releasing the first proper trailer for season 5 with them, also on the big screen.

While this IMAX release is a serious treat for fans, let’s not beat about the bush: this is HBO’s way of upping marketing for the upcoming season. Since everyone’s doing teasers and viral videos (which HBO too has done for this show), taking “GoT” to the theater screen seems like the next logical step.

Plus, it will allow audiences to have their memory refreshed while immersing themselves in this amazing and violent world like never before – and HBO promises that the IMAX remastering will be worth the while.

Season 5 of the series will return on HBO this spring.
