The development team at CD Projekt RED announces that it plans to expand the GOG brand with an entirely new Galaxy software suite, which is designed to allow players to experience multiplayer with those who are gaming on Steam without adding any sort of new DRM solution.

The company wants to create a small piece of software that will allow those who buy video games form the digital distribution service to seamlessly connect with their friends who are playing on Steam from Valve.

Support for more services will be added in the future and Galaxy is designed to be entirely optional for those who buy GOG titles.

The single-player sections of the titles can be played offline at any time, without the need for any sort of authentication, but gamers can also use the new solution in order to then log in and play multiplayer.

CD Projekt RED states in the official announcement that, “An optional client will be introduced later this year to allow for easy game updating, and GOG.com has already begun working with developers to implement the technology in their games.”

The first title to support Galaxy will be The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has recently been revealed as coming to the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft on February 24 of next year.

Those who pre-order the title on GOG will be able to get instant access to a free copy of Neverwinter Nights, complete with all its expansion, and will get a price cut as long as they register the previous two releases in the franchise.

Gamers who live in regions of the world where the price is higher than in the United States can also get a number of coupons from GOG in order to buy other titles that have the same value.

Pre-orders of The Witcher 3 will also include a digital artbook, a comic book, more music tracks and other content.

GOG started life as Good Old Games, a service that was focused on delivering updated versions of classic titles that ran well on modern computers without any intervention from players and included all the released content.

At the moment, the company is offering a wide variety of titles, both old and new, and the launch of the new Galaxy solution makes it a more direct alternative to services like Steam, Origin, uPlay and Green Man Gaming.
