About a month ago, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has made available for purchase in its home land the high-end Android-based Samsung Galaxy S smartphone, and it seems that it can call it a success. During the first month of availability, the device was sold in about half a million units, becoming this way one of the most popular mobile phones on the Korean market at the moment.

The Samsung Galaxy S is available for purchase in South Korea on the airwaves of SK Telecom. The wireless carrier was happy to report (via Samsung Hub) that it sold the first 100,000 units of Galaxy S in only six days after the launch, than it topped the 300,000 units mark in 19 days, and that it sold the half a millionth Galaxy S during the 33rd day since it made the handset available for purchase.

The figure is impressive enough for the South Korean market, and also shows that it might not be too long before this device takes the crown from Apple's iPhone, which was sold in over 800,000 units within 8 months since launch. In case Smasung's device maintains momentum, it should reach that mark during the next two or three weeks.

Samsung too seems to be impressed with the popularity its device enjoys on the market. The phone was already launched in various markets around the world, and including the US, where T-Mobile and AT&T have it available as the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate, respectively.

According to the latest news around the web, Samsung was so impressed with its device that it invited iPhone 4 users who experienced problems with their iPhone 4 units to go for a Galaxy S instead. Moreover, Samsung UK's tweets showed that these units were offered for free, and it seems that this was Samsung's response to Apple dragging its Omnia II handset into the antennagate affair.
