Samsung Galaxy S, the high-end mobile phone the South Korean handset vendor brought to the market earlier this year, has just got its first CyanogenMod 6.1 Build, although it was released only in a beta flavor for the time being.

Even if the new solution was made available only for Galaxy S GT-i9000, and not for the US versions of the handset as well, though it might not be too long before another ROM is made available, with support for more devices.

For those who are not familiar with the CM ROMs, we should note that they are aimed at expanding the functionality of a mobile phone through adding new features into the mix, unavailable on the stock Android OS.

“This is an AOSP-based build with extra contributions from many people which you can use without any type of Google applications,” a recent post on CM forums notes.

“I found a link from some other project that can be used to restore the Google parts […]. I've still included the various hardware-specific code, which seems to be slowly being open-sourced anyway,” the post continues.

However, for the time being, the work on Galaxy S specific software has just begun, and it appears that the first release is pretty buggy, even if the solution brings increased performance increases.

It appears that the new beta build would be able to offer a performance boost of almost 750 in Quadrant, when switching the filesystem from RFS to EXT4.

The installation of this CyanogenMod 6.1 beta build on a Galaxy S smartphone is not a complicated process, but it comes with a series of special requirements, it appears.

Those who would like to install it on their devices should think twice before making the move, as this is only an early build, and it might easily brick the device if something goes wrong during the installation process or afterwards.

In case there are some who are willing to go ahead with the installation of this custom ROM, they would do so at their own risk.

All the necessary info on the installation process of the said CyanogenMod 6.1 beta build can be found on the CyanogenMod Forums here.
