Samsung Galaxy S, the popular Android-based mobile phone that the South Korean handset vendor brought to the market last year is currently being upgraded to the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread operating system at Vodafone Australia.

The wireless carrier has just announced that the new platform version is being currently delivered to the owners of a Galaxy S smartphone on its airwaves.

The same as with previous updates for the device, users can download and install the new firmware via the Samsung Kies desktop application.

“We are pleased to say that the new version of software has passed our internal testing process and is now available for Vodafone & 3 customers via Samsung Keis,” the wireless carrier notes in a recent blog post.

The new Android 2.3.3 ‘Gingerbread’ (I9100TDUKF4) update for Samsung's former flagship device might not be the latest platform iteration from Google, but it does bring the handset close to that release.

Those who would like to download and install the new software update on their devices would simply have to connect the handset to the desktop PC, start the application, search for the new software and then follow the on-screen instructions.

According to Vodafone, the update process would include:

Step 1: Connect your smartphone with your computer, it should auto-start with Samsung Kies (if it doesn’t, just open that application on your computer) Step 2: Follow the prompts to update your Samsung Kies on your computer Step 3: Once installed, Samsung Kies auto-detect a new firmware is available for your Samsung Galaxy S Step 4: Follow the instructions on your computer to install the new software for Android 2.3.3 on your Samsung Galaxy S The Galaxy S was updated to Android 2.2 Froyo in the second half of the last year, and Samsung promised the Gingerbread upgrade as soon as Google released the new OS flavor. What remains to be seen is whether the company would upgrade its handset to the next OS version, Ice Cream Sandwich.
