The phone is already listed at Samsung with this OS on top

Galaxy S III, the flagship Android-based smartphone that Samsung brought to the market two years ago, is about to receive a software update at US Cellular, so as to provide users with a taste of the Android 4.4 KitKat platform.

Although the smartphone was said to never receive the update, Sprint has already pushed it to its users, and it seems that it might not be too long before other carriers in the United States make a similar move as well.

Currently, the US Cellular page for the Galaxy S III (on Samsung’s official website) lists the smartphone as running under the Android KitKat platform right out of the box, which suggests that it might not be too long before things indeed turn out this way.

Of course, the wireless operator hasn’t announced a thing on the matter as of now, though all might be confirmed very soon by the looks of it, SamMobile notes.

Other major mobile phone carriers in the United States might follow suit as well soon after, but it remains to be seen when exactly that will happen.

However, given that newer smartphones in Samsung’s lineup are still waiting for a KitKat update, including the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II, chances are that some Galaxy S III users out there will have to wait several weeks more for the software to be delivered to them.

One thing that should also be noted here is the fact that Samsung doesn’t plan on releasing Android 4.4 KitKat to the owners of the International Galaxy S III model, at least not at the moment.

The South Korean mobile phone maker has confirmed recently that only the smartphones available in the US via wireless carriers will be receiving the software.

While KitKat won’t hit all Galaxy S III devices in an official manner, users can already download and install some unofficial ROMs for their smartphones.

However, as SamMobile notes, Samsung might finally manage to resolve the issues that prevent it at the moment from releasing KitKat on Galaxy S III, and the update could land on the smartphone via the official channels as well.

For the time being, however, it remains to be seen when exactly the Android 4.4 KitKat platform will be pushed to US Cellular’s Galaxy S III and how fast other carriers in the country will kick off its deployment as well. Keep an eye on this space for additional details on the matter.
