Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless might soon become the first operator in the United States to bring to its network the latest flagship Android-based handset from South Korean vendor Samsung, namely the Galaxy S II.

According to some of the latest rumors on the matter, the company might have the new device available for its customers as soon as August 12th, roughly two weeks from now.

Apparently, Los Angeles industry analyst Paul Mueller has learned that Verizon stores in the city would be set to receive the smartphone on that day, which means that other locations around the country might also have it in stock then.

Moreover, he reportedly stated that, while the date is uncertain, the fact that Verizon would be the first wireless carrier in the United States to receive the device is a fact.

Other operators would also add the Android-based smartphone to their offering, but only about one month later.

The Samsung Galaxy S II was already made available for purchase in various other markets around the world, with the United States being the last one to receive it.

Even so, the device was highly successful around the globe, with a number of more that 6 million units said to have been sold since its official release.

Some of the latest reports on this device suggested that Samsung might be set to bring the Galaxy S II on the US market sometime in August.

The device comes with a fast 1.2GHz dual-core application processor inside, complemented by 1GB of RAM, and capable of offering increased performance capabilities.

The smartphone also features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display, along with 16GB of internal memory, and support for additional storage space via a microSD memory card slot.

On the back, the Samsung Galaxy S II features an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for recording videos in full HD, complemented by a 2MP camera on the front.
