Today, Samsung announced the immediate availability of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software update for the Galaxy S II smartphone in various markets in Europe and Asia.

Starting today, March 13th, the owners of a Galaxy S II device in Hungary, Poland and Sweden, in Europe, as well as those in South Korea, can download and install the software on their devices.

Users in other countries will need to wait a bit longer before the update is released for their devices as well, though it appears that those living in the UK will get a taste of it as soon as next week.

Samsung UK has already announced plans for the move, a recent article on Pocket-lint reads. The company promises the update for the next week.

“Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19th March,” the mobile phone maker announced.

Apparently, the software will arrive on unlocked devices at first, while carrier-branded phones are expected to receive it at a later date.

As usual, carriers need to approve the new update before sending it out to their users, a process that might take some time to complete.

Thus, the handset vendor announced that the “availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process.”

Undoubtedly, additional info on the matter will emerge as soon as the software arrives at the various operators in the country, so keep an eye on this space for additional info on the matter.

In the meantime, users who own an unlocked Galaxy S II smartphone in the UK should be looking out for a notification to arrive on their devices. As soon as it is there, they will be able to upgrade their handsets to the long-expected Ice Cream Sandwich OS flavor.
