South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics promised a while ago an official update for its Galaxy S handset to the latest version of Google's Android operating system, namely 2.2 Froyo, and reports on the solution already landing on various Galaxy S units out there started to emerge.

Various Galaxy S owners in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden have reported the availability of the new Android 2.2 Froyo update, and say that they managed to update their phones, though not all of the reports are favorable.

The news comes shortly after an Android 2.2 JPM update for the handset was spotted on Samsung's Open Source Center.

The JPM solution was said to be the final version of that Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S, and it appears that the handset vendor already started pushing it out to users, though nothing was announced officially on the matter.

Some of the new features that Android 2.2 JPM for the Galaxy S comes with include:

- Android 2.2 JIT compiler - Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility - New Android Market with auto-updating - Speed improvements - Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover - Improved default keyboard - Quick links to “GPS” and “Auto rotation” toggles on notification bar added - Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock - Colored icons in settings - GPS Fix - Colored settings icons - Media Hub - Darker menu theme, navy blue color - Better Exchange support - Video records in MP4 format - New Search widget - New Gmail application

According to a recent article on briefmobile, those Galaxy S users interested in getting the Android 2.2 update should get the Samsung Kies application on their windows-based desktop computers, fire it up, connect the handset, and then install the update.

However, there are small chances that the update would actually be visible for all Galaxy S owners out there, especially since the South Korean mobile phone maker hasn't announce it officially as of yet.

Most probably, if users received the OS upgrade, the handset vendor is only testing its release at the moment, while the general deployment should be kicked off soon, so keep an eye on this space for additional info on the matter.

Update: All is official now. The update will be gradually rolled-out to users in the following weeks.
