In early September, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics is expected to make a new Galaxy Note smartphone official at the IFA 2014 show in Berlin, and it appears that it could pack the phone with iris scanning technology.

The company was already rumored to make such a feature available inside the Galaxy S5 smartphone, but, while that did not happen, it appears that enthusiasts might see the functionality included in the upcoming Galaxy Note 4 device.

What the feature will provide users with includes the possibility to unlock their smartphones without touching the screen, which should deliver an extra layer of security.

Chances are that additional applications will also be tied to the iris scanner, allowing users to make payments with their devices or to hide files from other people. Overall, the feature should work in a similar manner to Galaxy S5’s fingerprint scanner.

While no specific details on what the feature would look like on the handset have been provided as of now, a recently spotted patent filing (via samsunggalaxynote4kopen) appears to shed some light on the matter, offering a glimpse of the interface that users will interact with when enabling the functionality.

It appears that all will happen on the lock screen, and that users will have to stare one eye in front of the screen, most probably aligning it in a certain manner with the front camera.
